Abstract

Aluminum is widely used in industry and it has been associated with several health hazards among exposed workers. The objective of our study was to find out some of the health hazards that may be present among workers exposed to aluminum in industry. This study was conducted on thirty workers in an aluminum foundry, who are occupationally exposed to aluminum. Twenty non-exposed individuals were chosen as control group. A statistically significant difference was found between exposed and control groups as regards pulse rate, blood pressure, FEF 50%, serum level of aluminum, serum iron, serum creatinine, RBCs count, hemoglobin content and hematocrit value. The environmental measurements in the workplace were within the permissible limits in Egypt. In conclusion, the elevation of serum aluminum level in workers exposed to environmental levels within the permissible limits was not associated with major health problems. We recommended to do a periodic check up for workers exposed to aluminum, including pulmonary functions and measuring serum Fe, TIBC, CBC and kidney functions, and to minimize aluminum exposure in the workplace by using proper control measures for fumes and dust, and by providing protective equipment and clothing for workers.
