Abstract

Background: Worldwide as well as in Egypt, the elderly population is in continuous increase. This increase sheds light on the importance of focusing on this vulnerable group and studying their most common medical disorders; however, there are limited studies on skin diseases in elderly populations. This cross-sectional study investigates the prevalence of skin diseases in the elderly patients in a sample of the Egyptian patients as well as risk factors influences on this prevalence. Methods: This study included all geriatric patients from both sexes with a dermatologic complaint attending outpatient clinic in Kasr El Ainy hospital and EL Houd El Marsoud hospital. , Full medical history was taken and complete general and dermatological examination were done. Patients were further subdivided into two groups according to their ages; where group A included patients (55-60 years old) and group B included patients (older than 60 years). The average duration for data collection was 12 months. Results: This study included 500 patients of both sexes 304 males( 60.8%) &196 females (39.2%), aged > 55 years, with mean age of (62.3±6.9 SD ) Eczematous diseases, papulosquamous diseases, fungal infection, pigmentary disorders, and viral infections represent the highest prevalence (32.6%, 13%, 12%, 9.8%, and 9.6% respectively). High statistically significant differences were seen between male and female cases as regard pigmentary disorders (13.2% in male and 4.6% in female) (p=0.00), While other dermatoses showed statistically non significant difference between male and female.High statistically significant differences were seen between middle and old age groups as regard eczematous diseases (24.7% in middle age and 40.8% in old age) (p=0.001) and parasitic infections ( 0% in middle age and 1.2% in old age) (p=0.04), pigmentary disorders (11.3% in middle age and 8.2% in old age) (p=0.02), immunobullous diseases ( 6.6% in middle age and 0.8% in old age) (p=0.02) and malignant tumors (12.9% in middle age and 1.4% in old age) (p=0.005). Conclusion: Skin disorders especially eczematous diseases are among those important health problems in elderly patients in this geographic area. Increasing general awareness about risk factors of these diseases and doing more researches in other regions are highly recommended.
