Abstract

This is a cross sectional descriptive study carried out on 300 street children attending the day centers in Cairo (five day care centers) and El Basma Outpatient clinic at Center of Social and Preventive Medicine, Cairo University aiming to estimate prevalence of depression among street children attending the day care centers in Cairo and El Basma Outpatient Clinic. The age of the children is below 18 years‚ number of children is 223 boys and 77girls. The data was collected through questionnaire for assessment of risk factors and possible delinquencies associated with homelessness and Patient Health Questionnaire (9). According to PHQ (9) ; the study revealed that 86% of studied street children were depressed. According to the severity of depression 17.7% of the children were severely depressed. 27.7% of street children were moderately depressed 19.6% were mildly depressed.Evaluation of risk factors of homelessness revealed that 78.7% of children left home because of family breakdown. The study show that 79.3% were exposed to physical abuse ; while 24% were exposed to sexual abuse. The study pointed out that 94% children were cigarette smokers. Hashish was abused by 89% of street children. 78.3% of street children were abusing tablets. The most common tablets of abuse were Tramadol ‚ Apatryl and Barbiturates. Beer was drunken by 15.7% of street children. 58% of them were abusing other drugs (e.g. Heroin-injections). Glue was inhaled by 17% of street children. The study revealed that 79% of street children were complaining of various health problems mostly respiratory problems (15.7%)‚ dermatological disease in percentage of (19.7%)‚ GIT disorder ; (21.7%)‚ parasitic infestations ; (16.7%) and (17.7%) have orthopedic problem. 18%‚18.3% and 12.7 % of children were complaining of E.N.T disease‚ dental disease and ophthalmological disease, respectively. 29% complaining of headache. 20.3% were complaining of urinary tract disorder ; while 18.7% have venereal disease.
