Abstract

Sixty patients were randomized to receive either variceal ligation or propranolol for the primary prevention of variceal bleeding from grade III or IV oesophageal varices. Both groups were comparable as regards compliance, bleeding and overall mortality. Adverse effects were significantly higher in the propranolol enough to recommend band ligation than propranolol for primary prevention of variceal bleeding.
