Abstract

VRE have recently emerged as increasingly important nosocomial pathogens. In our study of VRE epidemiology in Abu El Riche New Hospital – El Mounira, rectal swabs from 113 patients revealed enterococcal colonization of 47 of the samples (41.6%). By vancomycin agar screening, 9 strains were resistant, while by measuring vancomycin MIC (by Sensititre); only 1 strain showed reduced sensitivity. Routine screening should be considered to detect and prevent the emergence of V.R.E. infections.
