Abstract

Fetal cord blood is rich in hemopoietic stem cells and progenitors and so it may be used as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation but it has two main disadvantages. The small number of progenitors and the prolonged neutropenia and thrombocytopenia after CBT. Thus, safe engraftment in adults is not predictable until a technology for ex-vivo expansion of cord blood cells is established.
