Objective : The aim of this work is to assess the occurrence and developement ofperipheral arterial disease and its risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidaemia, smoking and microalbuminuria) among recently type 2 diabetic patients and those with duration of less than 5 years and among patients with more than 5 yearsduration of diabetes.Research design and methods: We selected 60 patients with type 2 diabetes (38-71 years of age) from the National institute of diabetes and endocrinology and fromdiabetes clinic in Kasr El Aini Hospital. 20 of them were recently diagnosed to bediabetic, 20 were with diabetes duration less than 5 years and 20 were with durationof diabetes more than 5 years. All patients were subjected to full history and clinical examination.Fasting blood glucose, lipid profile (serum cholestrol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL) and microalbumin in urine were done. All patients were subjected to measurement of ankle-brachial index using dopplerprobe connected to specific machine for pressure measurement.PAD diagnosis was based on an ABI of <0.9 on either side, calculated by dividingankle blood pressure by brachial blood pressure.Result and conclusion: Out of the 60 patients there were 41 (68.3%) withoutPVD and 19 (31.7%) with PVD.So, the results of our study showed that PAD is an unaddressed andunderappreciated problem for patients with diabetes. While many diabetes patientswith PAD do not have any symptoms, some do experience problems such as leg pain or fatigue during walking and attribute it to just getting older.
