Abstract

Retinal vein occlusion constitutes the second mostcommon retinal vascular disorder coming after diabeticretinopathy. Panretinal photocoagulation has beenwidely used as the treatment of choice. The presumedrole of it is to prevent the development of vitreoushemorrhage and neovascular glaucoma after occurrenceof neovascularization in eyes with retinal ischaemia. Onthe other hand, it markedly damages the peripheralvisual field and may convert an eye with normalperipheral vision into almost a blind eye. Surgicaltreatment of RVO is considered a very promising optionin the management of RVO but the benefits must be weighted against the side effects.
