Abstract

Inhaled corticosteroids are the most effective long-term therapy available for treatment of bronchial asthma.Leptin is an adipocyte derived hormone that play a role in the regulation of body weight and it is reported to be high in the asthmatic patients. In the current study there was a significant improvement in asthmatic patients after treatment with medium and high dose ICS (clinically and by pulmonary function tests).Anthropometric measurements (height, weight, BMI and growth velocity) showed a significant affection after treatment with high dose of ICS for 6 months. Serum leptin level was higher in asthmatic patients than controls at the beginning of the study. ICS didn’t affect the serum leptin level in asthmatic children, neither the medium dose nor the high dose. Further work is needed to confirm whether interventions to reduce circulatory leptin level can improve outcome of asthma or not.
