Abstract

Barrett’s esophagus is a premalignant lesion resulting from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The prevalence of Barrett’s esophagus among a group of Egyptian patients with reflux esophagitis (100 patients) was studied. Histopathological and flow cytometric analysis were done on endoscopic specimens obtained from the patients and a correlation was made between dysplasia in Barrett’s esophagus and flow cytometric findings. The prevalence of Barrett’s esophagus among 100 Egyptian patients with reflux esophagitis was 30% and this was higher than the reported incidence. PAS stain was helpful together with (H and E) stain in the diagnosis of reflux esophagitis and Barrett’s esophagus. The correlation between dysplasia in Barrett’s esophagus and ploidy was highly significant while S-phase fraction and did not correlate with the degree of dysplasia however, cases with high S-phase level even without dysplasia need follow up. It was concluded that flow cytometry is a useful adjunct to histopathology in detection of patients of Barrett’s esophagus at risk of malignancy.
