Abstract

Biliary atresia is a progressive obliterative disease of the bile ducts of unknown etiology. This study is concerned with diagnosis of biliary atresia (TC sign by sonar, needle liver biopsy and preoperative diagnostic laparoscopy with or without cholangiography), surgery of biliary atresia (Kasai operation and its modifications and an overview of liver transplantation), and prognostic factors affecting the outcome of surgery for biliary atresia (age, condition of the liver, preoperative needle biopsy histological score, and postoperative core biopsy score).
