Abstract

Myocardial protection continues to be a major concern for anesthesiologists during open heart surgery. Intraoperative myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury has led to speculation on the adequacy of current cardioprotective strategies and the search for better ones. Until recently hypothermia had been an acknowledged protection. Now, warm cardioplegia emerges as the better and more protective technique in open heart surgery.
