Abstract

The traditional surgical exposure of the lumbar spine has been by the posterior approach. This approach was both technically easy and safe in most surgeons' hands and didn't need aided chest or general surgery consultant's support. Pedicle screw/rod instrumentation was developed as a standalone device to augment arthrodesis via the posterior approaches. Its introduction has demonstrated its ability to function as load-sharing device and to adequately fixate the spine and increase segmental stiffness thus achieve acceptable fusion rates in the lumbar wedge fracture
