Abstract

Asbestos is a generic term for a group of six naturally occurring, fibrous silicate minerals that have been widely used in commercial products.Asbestos occurs in two groups; amphiboles and serpentine, based on their silicate crystal structural minerals.Amphiboles include; Amosite, Crocidolite, Anthophyllite, Tremolite and Actinolite.Serpentine include; Chrysotile.Health related problems occur due to inhalation, ingestion and skin contact with asbestos, where its inhalation leads to asbestosis. The initial symptom of asbestosis is shortness of breath on exertion, often accompanied by dry cough. Workers constantly exposed to asbestos have increased risk of developing bronchial carcinoma, especially the cell type adeno-carcinoma.Surveys of patients with mesothelioma have shown that high proportion gives a history of asbestos exposure.
