The hemolytic-uremic syndrome is a predominantly pediatriccondition that consists of the simultaneous triad of acute renal failure,thrombocytopenia, and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia associatedwith distorted erythrocytes.This study included a retrospective hospitalbasedchart review of cases of HUS among children hospitalized in thePediatric Nephrology Unit, Cairo University during the five-year periodfrom March 2005 to March 2010. Those were 28 in number. In addition,10 cases with features of HUS hospitalized from April to October 2010were included in a prospective analysis. The study summarizes theclinical and laboratory findings in these patients as well as the treatmentreceived and outcome. Predictors of a bad prognosis and death wereelucidated. It draws attention to the importance of this disease entity andthe need for supportive and specific therapies.
