This prospective study was carried on 153 newborn infants,admitted to NICU's- Children’s hospital, Cairo University in the periodfrom March 2006 – March 2007. There were 90 males (58.8%) and 63females (41.2%). Cholestasis was the most common presentation of liverdiseases, constituted 73.8% of cases. Both inspissated bile syndromesecondary to hemolytic anemia and sepsis were the most common causesof cholestasis. Sepsis and hypoxia/ischemia were the identified causes ofacute liver failure among the studied neonates. As regards the mortalityrate, about 44.4% of neonates with liver disease died (68 cases); sepsisand acute liver failure were the most probable causes of death.
