An important factor in personal development is child education. This study aims at describing some mental abilities among children in a rural setting. Children between nine and twelve years of life in Nazlet Alashter village were studied to represent early years of education. Assessment was done using a mental battery of three tests (Similarities, Digit span, Curiosity) which focused on measuring abstract thinking, memory, attention and curiosity. Majority of the examined children have good to excellent observation and interpretation. Children showed low grades of memory and attention and very low curiosity score. Girls were better than boys in interpretation and attention. Educational grade, child order, and mother's education were related factors to test scores. In conclusion, the combination of an inadequate educational system and uneducated parents particularly the mother has a negative impact on the examined mental abilities. The study has shed light that special care should be given to mental health of the children to emphasize children creativity and free thinking.
