Melasma is an acquired pigmentary disorder with irregular macular lesions that varies from light to dark brown or grey-brown. The face and the other sun exposed areas are the sites of affection. Important probable causes: hormonal factors; as pregnancy and contraceptive pills, sun exposure or idiopathic.Different treatment modalities have been used for the treatment of melasma including: topical treatment using sunscreens, alpha hydroxy acids, retinoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, azelaic acid cream, kojic acid and skin bleaching creams containing hydroquinone 2% and 4%, Chemical peeling using glycolic acid, phenol and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) have been also used. Other treatment modalities include laser and dermabrasion. We treated 30 cases of melasma in our study, all were females. They were all primed with hydroquinone cream, retinoic acid and all were advised to avoid sun exposure as much as possible and use sun screens. Group (A) used trichloroacetic acid as a chemical peeling alone, while we added vitamin C topically in group (B), which showed better results and delayed recurrence.
