Abstract

With the development of modern science and technology and the rise of living standards, health and long life have become an objective pursued by people. The development of medicine and the extensive application of chemical drugs would inevitably bring about many iatrogenic and drug induced diseases. It has, become a common aspiration of doctors and the people to seek alternative therapies free from toxic and side effects as cupping therapy. This is a cross sectional study in which 200 medical staff were assessed regarding their awareness, attitude and practice of cupping. These medical staffs are working in faculties of medicine of Cairo University and Al-Azhar University and the medical department of the National Research Center. It was concluded from this study that the knowledge about cupping between the medical staff is very low to the extent that more than (75%) had got a score of knowledge less than (50%). As regards their attitude towards cupping, less than 30% accept it as a method of treatment and cure. Only 1% of the studied group has been found practicing cupping to others. On the other hand more than 70% of the studied group encourages the introduction of cupping in the curriculum of faculty of medicine. This study also showed that the friends represented the most important source of information to the studied group. But the medical books represented the least source of information. The most important recommendation of this study is doing more scientific researches on cupping to prove its efficacy, safety and quality and to detect the diseases in which it is so effective.
