Abstract
Stable isotopes are non-radioactive atoms of the same chemical elements. Its application in clinical diagnosis and research have proven to be valuable. Stable isotope breath tests offer a non-invasive procedure for assessment of gasterointestinal and nutritional function. Such techniques offer advantages over older methods in sensitivity and specificity in diagnosis of "inborn errors of metabolism". They have been used extensively to analyse the metabolism of protein, fat, carbohydrates and minerals.
