Glucose insulin potassium infusion was given to 20 pediatric patients undergoing open heart surgery for correction of congenital heart defects. Level of CK-MB, hemodynamic parameters: CI, SVI, SVRI, FTc, PVI were measured. Dosage of inotropic drugs used post-operatively was recorded. The measured parameters were compared with a similar group of patients not receiving GIK infusion. GIK group proved to have better SVI, PVI, and decreased need for inotropic drug dosage. Conclusion: GIK proved to be a safe and reliable adjuvant to myocardial protection technique for pediatric patients undergoing open heart surgery for repair of congenital heart diseases.
