Abstract

Three-phase study was conducted in the National cancer Institute, pediatric oncology department, Cairo University, aiming at development of feasible health education program for patients to increase their adherence to treatment protocols. First phase was assessment of needs and demands of both clients and health care providers. Second phase focused on developing different educational materials including written, audiovisual and games. Third phase concerned on the evaluation of the acceptability of the developed materials among the target population as well as providers. Majority (82%) of providers felt that poor compliance is a problem. Written materials were the first health care providers’ choice as method for education (72.7%) and the second clients’ choice after counseling (70.2% and 79.8% respectively). Clients preferred the outpatient clinic to be the place for education (55.8%) while health care providers did not mind education to be done in outpatient clinic, inpatient wards and health education center. The most common source for information about cancer treatment and side effects was other patients and their companions (42%). However (79.8%) of clients want to know more information from physician, on the other hand (60.6%) health team suggested that education should be done by health education specialist. Written materials, audiovisual and word games were designed to answer the clients questions, the health care providers were involved as facilitator in the distribution of the written materials, all designed materials were accepted by clients and health care providers.
