Abstract
Novel risk factors for coronary artery disease have emerged from epidemiological studies and might prove useful clinically. Several studies have focused on the aortic elastic properties and its relation to coronary artery disease. This study was done on three groups, comparing the elastic properties of the thoracic aorta using transthoracic Echo-Doppler study of a group of patients with acute myocardial infarction 40-60 years old with the elastic properties of two healthy control groups aged 40-60years old and 20-40 years old. The study shows that patients with acute myocardial infarction have stiffer aortas compared to their healthy age matched control subjects .However the study did not show statistical difference between aortic elastic properties of old healthy control subjects and those of younger healthy control subjects. Although that relation between aortic elastic properties and coronary artery disease does not imply causation , the study showed the importance of studying aortic elastic properties in patients with coronary artery disease.
