Abstract

This study was designed to assess the role of low dose intrathecal sufentanil (in 2 doses) combined with a low dose of isobaric bupivacaine and to compared it with a low dose intrathecal morphine combined with a low dose of isobaric bupivacaine after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Since postoperative pain in such procedure although less than a conventional open technique, may be significant particularly during the first 12 hours. The duration of action of each drug, effect on pain scores, haemo-dynamics, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, stress response and side effects were assessed. Morphine with local anaesthetic produced analgesia for 7-12 hours postoperatively with no incidence of respiratory depression. Sufentanil in 10 and 20 mu/g with local anaesthetic produced analgesia up to 4 hours postoperatively with more dense block with 20 mu/g but with higher incidence of side effects.
