Abstract

Induced hypotension is effective in decreasing blood loss and providing better visibility in the surgical field. This study compared the haemodynamics and blood loss during controlled hypotension induced with either adenosine, esmolol or lumbar epidural anaethesia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasties. The study included sixty adult patients divided into three groups (20 patients for each group). The study showed that both adenosine and esmolol were effective with no side effects but epidural technique required a longer time to obtain the target blood pressure.
