Abstract

Arrhythmia is a very common complication in patients with calcific aorticstenosis both before and after aortic valve replacement surgery, sucharrhythmias may be fatal in some cases. We experienced the effect of prophylactic amiodarone on 20 patientsundergoing aortic valve replacement surgery, while another 20 patientswere considered as control group. Our amiodarone regimen was 3mg/kgintravenous over 20 minutes just after induction of anesthesia, followedby 12mg/kg intravenous infusion over the next 24 hours, then oralamiodarone 200mg per day.Amiodarone was found beneficial in decreasing the incidence of postoperativearrhythmias in these patients, number of DC shocks, and joulesof DC were also decreased significantly
