Background: Diabetes is an individual and national problem that is worsening despitecurrent efforts to overcome it. Better adherence can be achieved by tailored patienteducation. Aim: The current interventional study was conducted to test the effectivenessof life style modification on control type 2 diabetes. Objectives: Improving type 2diabetics KAP through health education, and testing the effect on disease management.Subjects and methods: One hundred and fifty six type 2 diabetes patients were recruitedfrom the NIDE in Cairo. Patients’ KAP was assessed before and after receiving monthlyhealth education sessions about healthy life style and diabetes care for six months.Outcome indicators were fasting blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, lipid profile, bodymass index, blood pressure, QOL and food frequency. Data analysis was applied tocompare three phases: pre intervention, early post intervention (after three months) andlate post-intervention (after six months) phase. Results: showed low mean scores ofknowledge at baseline especially among females, illiterates and non working participant.There was a significant improvement of the mean scores for KAP at both postinterventionphases. A significant improvement was detected in FBS, HbA1c, TG, BP(both systolic and diastolic), QOL, and food frequency. Conclusion: Health education oftype 2 diabetes patients about healthy life style including individualized nutrition,exercise, and diabetes care education is beneficial in improving their KAP of diabetescare and their glycemic control, blood pressure, QOL and dietary habits.
