Abstract

Objective: To assess the level of salivary transferrin in saliva of patients with oral cancer and to correlate it with histologic grading and clinical staging.Materials and methods: The current study was carried out on 28 individuals attending to National Cancer divided into two groups. Cancer group included 18 patients diagnosed as having OSCC and control group included 10 individuals. Results: When level of salivary transferrin in cancer group was compared with that of control group, there was a highly significant difference between them. There was no correlation between salivary transferrin level and stage or gradeConclusions: salivary transferrin is considered as a suitable biomarker for early detection of oral cancer. It can predict recurrence, so it can be used in the follow up period. Tf can’t help in prognosis as it is not correlated with tumor stage or grade.
