Abstract

This study investigated the knowledge, attitude and practice of infection control measures among dental practitioners in the city of Cairo, Egypt, and to determine whether the dental practice under review meets standards of infection control or not. Methods: a pre- structured self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 200 randomly selected dentists working in dental clinics at time of the survey; data was then collected and analyzed statistically. Results: response rate to this study was 100%, 59.5% agree to treat AIDS patients, 88.5% reported to be vaccinated against HBV, only 44% change and serialize handpieces between patients, 37.5% claimed they have anti-retraction valves in their water and air lines systems in their working area, about personal protective equipments (PPE) 94% reported to wear gloves, 91% wear face masks, 39 % wear protective eyewear.66.5% performed hand hygiene regularly before and after treating each patient. 94.5% of studied dentists had special containers for sharp disposal. 81.5% used autoclave for sterilization of their instruments. Higher knowledge as well as good attitude and practice of infection control measure appears in older age group dentists with higher mean years of experience. Compliance with infection control standards is higher in private dental clinics and private hospital clinics. Conclusion: Written health programs are newly implemented practice which has to be legalized, Treating HIV and HBV infected patients are not well tolerated by practitioners, There is insufficient awareness among younger age group dentists about the importance of immunization against infectious disease, Adherence to standard infection control measures regarding wearing protective face shields and wearing protective eyewear is low, Negligence about regular maintenance of sterilization devices and having proper air filtration systems in place of practice is high, Continuous infection control training program for dental health care providers is deficient.
