Gingival enlargement is usually caused by local condition such as poor oral hygiene, food impaction, or mouth breathing, systemic conditions such as hormonal changes, drug therapy, or tumor infiltration may complicate the process. There are many modalities for the treatment of gingival enlargement. The most widely performed is the conventional gingivectomy by using the scalpel. Other modalities include laser assisted gingivectomy. The aim of the present study was evaluation the efficacy of a diode laser 980nm on gingival enlargement. The study population included 20 patients with gingival enlargement, They were selected from the outpatient clinic of Oral Medicine and Periodontology Department, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine Cairo University. The patients divided into two groups, group treated by conventional gingivectomy, and other group treated bya diode laser 980 nm. The clinical parameter which include gingival index, plaque index, probing depth, pain assessment and gingival healing were recorded at baseline,7, 14 and 28 days.Result of this study revealed that no statistical difference was found in both technique regarding recorded clinical parameter exept in pain assissment that show statistically difference between conventional and diode laser 980 nm assissted gingivectomy at second, third and fourth day.And visual inspection of the surgical sites (scalpel and diode laser) revealed initial delay of helaing of the laser wound as compared with conventional scalpel gingivectomy at the first week. After 2 week it is almost impossible to differentiate between the scalpel and diode laser 980 nm wound. From the results, it was concluded that diode laser 980nm is effective in management of gingival enlargement.
