Abstract

Objectives: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different prepared tooth color namely the high translucency, light, medium-light, medium-dark and dark shade on the resulting optical properties of two all ceramic materials namely the high translucency and low translucency e.max press glass ceramic. Materials and methods: A total of fifty disc samples were constructed from a light polymerized composite resin material equivalent to different tooth preparation shade. Discs were constructed using a specially design Teflon mold with a 10 mm diameter and 1.5 mm height. Samples of the light polymerized composite resin material were constructed from five different colors shade as follows : a high-translucency color (ND1), a light color (ND3), a medium-light color (ND5), a medium-dark color (ND7), and a dark color (ND9) . A total of fifty disc samples were constructed from lithium disilicate glass ceramic ( E.max press glass ceramic). Discs were constructed using a specially designed copper mold with diameter of 10 mm and 1.5 mm height. Ceramic discs were constructed with two different types of IPS e.max press glass ceramic : HT ingots (high translucency) and LT ingots (low translucency). Each disc of composite was cemented to the ceramic sample using adhesive resin cement. Samples of different groups were subjected to spectrophotometric analysis to measure the color and diffuse reflectance. Finally, all data and results of color difference (ΔE) and (L*a*b*) values were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between different interactions. There was no statistically significant difference between (High translucency / ND9) and (Low translucency / ND9); both showed the statistically significant highest mean (ΔE) value. There was no statistically significant difference between (High translucency / ND3) and (Low translucency / ND3); both showed the statistically significant lowest mean (ΔE) value. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions could be drawn: 1-The underlying tooth abutment color is a crucial factor that alter the color of final ceramic restoration. 2-The underlying tooth abutment color is a deciding factor when selecting the type of ceramic for a laminate veneer restoration.
