Abstract

objective: The study was designed to measure and compare the marginal accuracy, fracture resistance and the bond strength of In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera ceramic material. Method: Twenty human molar teeth were divided into two equal groups, (ten teeth each) according to the ceramic material used, each group was then sub-divided into two equal subgroups according to type of sample construction either crowns or discs shaped samples. The crown samples were constructed for evaluation of marginal accuracy and fracture resistance while the disc-shaped samples were constructed for evaluation of bond strength. For marginal accuracy and fracture resistance measurement, molar teeth were mounted into acrylic resin blocks to be milled in a milling machine .Construction of In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera crown were performed according to the manufacture recommendation and lastly Vitadur-alpha porcelain was applied and fired. The core and Vitadur N-porcelain of both In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera ceramic material were standardized using two copper counter dies, one for standardization of the core and the other for standardization of core and it`s veneering. Each In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera crown was cemented on its corresponding tooth with Variolink II then thermocycling of the specimens was made. The vertical gap distance was measured by stereo microscope. The fracture resistance was measured by Lloyd universal testing machine until fracture of samples .The mode of fracture was visually examined. For evaluation of shear bond strength, ten discs were constructed five discs for each ceramic material then cemented on the prepared tooth using Variolink II. The bond strength was then measured using Lloyd universal testing machine until failure. Failed samples of the two materials were then scanned by electron microscope and classified to determine the mode of failure. Results: the vertical marginal gap distance measurements for the samples of In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera groups, the mean values were 68.9 and 62.4 μm respectively while the fracture resistance measurements for the samples of In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera groups the mean values were 1456.24 and 1889.57 N respectively. The shear bond strength values for the samples of In-Ceram and Turkom-Cera groups, the mean values 13.22 and 8.58 MPa respectively (P<0.05).conclusion: The results showed that the Turkom-Cera gives a better marginal fit than the In-Ceram crowns while fracture resistance of Turkom-Cera crowns was higher than In-Ceram .The bond strength of In-Ceram was higher than Turkom-Cera. Also the results stated that the debonding of In-Ceram was cohesive while adhesive cohesive for Turkom-Cera.
