In patients with HCV chronic active hepatitis, hypothyroidism as detected by low T3, T4 & high TSH is a frequent finding which significantly correlated with the degree of activity as evaluated by liver enzymes & liver biopsy. This could be related to the presence of antithyroid antibodies which was more evident in females than in males. In cirrhotic patients impaired thyroid function is expected. In diabetic patients hypothyroidism and antithyroid antibodies could be detected. In fatty liver thyroid dysfunction was not significant, but antithyroid antibodies could be detected without clinical effects.
