Abstract

The epidemic of obesity is increasing in all countries. Despite the need for family-based treatment, the number of family based interventions focusing on managing adolescent obesity in Egypt, is limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of family based intervention on weight reduction among Egyptian adolescents and reduction in obesity inducing behaviors. Methods: 80 overweight and obese class I adolescents with one of their family member were enrolled in a family based program which consisted of nine behavioral education sessions given on weekly basis, carried out by a single physician. BMI, waist circumference, frequency of obesity inducing behaviors were assessed at baseline and at 6 months. Results: There was significant reduction in the frequency of obesity inducing behaviors like skipping breakfast and meals, fast food consumption, unplanned snacks and TV watching ≥ 2 hours daily. Acquiring self monitoring skill using food and physical activity diary had significant effect on achieving ≥ 10 % reduction from baseline weight. Mean family attendance was 5.7±1.5, a positive correlation between weight percent reduction and attendance was observed. There was a 10.3%, 10.5% and 7.6% reduction in weight, BMI and WC, respectively over 6 months, all these differences were statistically significant (p- < .001).Conclusion: Family based approach in managing overweight and obesity could offer a possible promising results in reducing weight by 10% and improving eating habits over 6 month among Egyptian adolescent.
