The aim of this study was to compare the anti-inflammatory action of each of allopurinol and low-dose prednisone with those of ibuprofen and meloxicam on carrageenan-induced rat paw edema, and to investigate the result of combining allopurinol with each of ibuprofen, meloxicam and low-dose prednisone in their anti-inflammatory outcomes. The study included 51 male albino rats allocated into 8 groups. All groups were injected with carrageenan to induce the paw edema. One group (the carrageenan group) did not receive drug treatment, serving as diseased control, four groups received the individual drugs, and three groups received allopurinol combined with the other three drugs. All drugs where administered orally one hour before carrageenan injection, and the change in the paw volume was measured by means of plethysmometer just after carrageenan injection and 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours afterwards. Results showed that all drugs and drug combinations produced reduction in the paw volume compared to the untreated carrageenan group. Combining allopurinol with each of ibuprofen, meloxicam and low-dose prednisone resulted in reduction of their anti-inflammatory action compared to their individual effects.
