Abstract

Introduction: Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. Aim: The aim of this study was health promotion of children attending the DEMPU and raising their level of health, aiming to have a better quality of life. Methods: This study was to improve the dietary habits and life style of 78 overweight and obese children (1-14years of age) attending Abou El Reesh outpatient clinic DEMPU due to nutritional cause, through a period of 10 months. Anthropometric measurements were obtained for the cases as well as for the mothers. An anonymous structured questionnaire was designed to collect data from parents and then interactive group sessions of nutrition education were conducted followed by immediate assessment of the gained knowledge. Results: The study showed that the majority of the studied children were aged 10 years and more 41%. The mean BMI was 29.86 ±4.68 for the age group 3-5y, 130.43 ±9.09 for 6-9y children and 32.53 ±6.44 for 10-more years age group. There was insignificant correlation between the BMI of the mothers and that of their children. Feeding habits showed statistical insignificance among different age groups except for the snacks (0.00). The majority of the children showed low level of physical activity (active play) in all age groups. The majority of the children in all age groups used to watch TV > 5 hours a day. In the immediate assessment of the gained knowledge after intervention showed that regarding food groups, proteins, carbohydrates, fat and fruits and vegetables were the most frequently mentioned food groups, 90.7%, 88%, 73.3%and 61.3% respectively, while the most frequently mentioned practices were encourage eating balanced food, encourage physical activity (active play), avoid increased carbohydrate/fat, avoid frying food 94.7%, 84%, 88%, 60%, respectively. Regarding the knowledge after nutrition education, increased carbohydrates sweets/refined grains, consumption fried food consumption, snacking and low level of physical were recognized by most of the mother as causes of obesity that require change. Conclusion and Recommendations: The study recommended that nutrition education should be mandated as required and essential component of DEMPU clinic. Continuously training of specialized personnel and upgrading the nutrition education message conducted to create a healthy home environment are all required to improve the health status of the overweight and obese children.
