Hospitals without an APS may be unable to provide safe,effective analgesia for patients with severe pain in different wards.This results in prolonged hospital stay, increased morbidityfollowing major surgery. Techniques such as PCA or epiduralanalgesia when used outside the framework of an acute painservice, are less effective and with higher incidence of side-effects.
