Abstract

Gene therapy is an emerging medical modality in which genetic diseases will be corrected by transfer of a normal version of the relevant gene into a patient somatic cell. It has application to many diseases for which current therapeutic approaches are ineffective or where the prospects for effective treatment are obscure. Autoimmune disease is defined as tissue damage or disturbed physiological function due to an autoimmune response. This tissue damage may be restricted to a specific organ such as hashimotos thyroidits, or it may be generalized affecting different body organs such as in systemic lupus erythematosus. Recently gene therapy has been also studied. The intention is to achieve one of three effects. First : the targeting of a know genetic defect, second : modulation of immune- modulating molecules, third : interference with signaling processes involved in autoimmune reactions
