Abstract

Superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is an important facial layer. The relation of the SMAS to facialnerve branches, mimetic muscles and retaining ligamentsmust be well known to the surgeon before doing face liftsurgery. Histological studies revealed the presence ofmuscle fibres within the retaining ligaments in still birth, which prevent skin sagging during childhood.
