Abstract

Diabetes mellitus which is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both is a silent killer, every 10 seconds a person dies as a consequence of the disease. Because it is often asymptomatic in its early stages and can remain undiagnosed for many years. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in all age groups, from children to the elderly. The disorder is progressively more common with advancing age. Fifty percent or more of the population after 80 to 90 years of age has glucose intolerance or diabetes. Diabetes has an enormous social impact, mostly due to its chronic microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular complications.
