Abstract

The nephrotic syndrome is defined by a urinary protein level exceeding 3.5 g per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area per day. Nephrotic syndrome may lead to renal insufficiency. Several primary glomerular diseases account for nephrotic syndrome, also it may be secondary to a variety of clinical disorders.Therapeutic approaches may be sought in the fields of supportive measures and specific or immunosuppressant treatment. Nonspecific therapies should be applied as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and statins. Specific therapy with corticosteroids, Calcineurin inhibitors (cyclosporine or tacrolimus), cytotoxic agents, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), Levamisole, Sirolimus, Rituximab and Eculizumab are used according to the type of glomerulonephropathy and the severity of the disease.
