Abstract

BackgroundBreastfeeding is the optimal way of providing ideal food for the health, growth, and development of infants while simultaneously benefiting the lactating mother. Exclusive breastfeeding should be the norm from birth until 6 months.This is an interventional study using educational information about exclusive breastfeeding during antenatal care with pre/post assessment.Aim of the workThe objectives of the study were aiming to test Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) of women attending to the antenatal clinic for follow up in their third trimester, to encourage and help working women to practice breastfeeding, to emphasize the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in first six months of life, to teach them to express their breast milk and feed it to the baby by cup and spoon when the mother is away.MethodologyThe study will included two phases: phase one to collect data about socio-demographic characteristic of the studied group and pre course questionnaire to assess the KAP in relation to breastfeeding. The intervention implantation in the form of educational information about benefits of exclusive breast feeding.Phase two to assess the effect of health education of breastfeeding through assessing the breastfeeding practices at (2nd, 4th and 6th months) during vaccination and after returning to work and follow up. Results It was found that the practice of exclusive breastfeeding up to the age of 6 months was not satisfactory. Return to work let mothers introduce supplementary feeds to their babies, providing health education on breastfeeding as an intervention for the studied group has shown to improve the mother’s knowledge and practice of exclusive breastfeeding.ConclusionEmployment of the mothers was shown to limit continuity of exclusive breastfeeding. However most of the included mothers were highly educated& it appeared that this factor increased their acceptance and motivated them to continue to exclusively breastfeed their babies.RecommendationFamily physician should urge policy maker to train medical personal who care for infants and mothers about the proper guidelines of breast milk expression, handling and storage of breast milk.
