Abstract

Objective. To promote the health of children in the age group from (24 – 60months) by enhancing recovery from diarrhea by assess and improve theknowledge, attitude and behavior (KAB) of the mothers towards theirchildren concerning the causes of diarrhea and its management and designthe Health Education (HE) materials to be used by care providers in FamilyMedicine Centers.Methods. The study was interventional health education study conductedbetween May 2010 and July 2010 at Al-Azab Family Health Care Unit inEgypt. Convenience sampling was used and data was collected by face-tofaceinterviews with mothers of children under 5 years of age (100 mothers)presented with concerns related to acute diarrhea.Results. The mean maternal age of the collected group was 30.7±5.1years,majority of mothers were well educated. After health education sessions,there was a significant improvement in mothers’ knowledge, attitude andbehavior regarding causes, symptoms, prevention and management ofdiarrhea. The grand mean score for knowledge significantly increased from50.3 ±19.1 to 78.9±14.A positive correlation was observed between maternalage and maternal education level on one hand and correction of knowledgerelated to diarrhea of the other hand.Conclusion. The current nutrition education intervention with a newlydeveloped health education material (flip chart) augmented mothers’ KABtowards management of diarrhea.
