Abstract

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal stem celldisorder of myeloid precursors. It is characterized by thepresence of philadilphia chromosome (Ph) resulting from reciprocaltranslocation of chromosome 9 and 22 . This translocation leads tothe fusion of the ABL gene from 9th chromosome and BCR genefrom 22nd chromosome. The fusion gene (BCR/ABL) encodes aprotein, with constitutive tyrosine kinase activity, which isresponsible for signal transduction. CML affects males more thanfemales and usually occurs in middle aged adults .It is known that the environmental exposures to cytotoxic andgenotoxic agents may be associated with increased risk of CML .
