Abstract

Precocious puberty is defined as the appearance of secondary sexual characters before the age of 7 to 8 yrs in girls & 9 yrs in boys leading to accelerated linear growth & bone maturation which leads to short final height. PP may be true precocious puberty (TPP) due to premature activation of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis or may be pseudoprecocious puberty (PPP) due to extrapituitary gonadotropin secretion or sex steroids secretion independent of GnRH. LHRH-a is the treatment of choice for TPP while in PPP the treatment is by management of the cause. We studied 101 patients with precocious puberty, 84 were girls & 17 were boys. 45 patients had TPP, 2 had PPP & the rests were normal variants (premature thelarche, adrenarche or menarche).Significant differences were found between boys with TPP and girls with TPP in Tanner staging and in BA advancement. Also, there were significant differences between boys and girls with CAH in Tanner staging and in BA advancement. In patients with TPP, we found approximately no correlation between age of presentation and weight SDS. We found also approximately no correlation between age of presentation and weight SDS in girls with premature thelarche.
