The management of early pregnancy complications has beenrevolutionized by the inception of early pregnancy units and withfacilities for transvaginal ultrasonography and rapid immunoassayof serum human chorionic gonadotropin and progesterone level.Since the introduction of transvaginal sonography in the late1980s, decreased cost and wider availability of equipment, ultrasound examination combined with serum hormonemeasurements becomes the mainstay of early pregnancy diagnosisand management. It helps in the differentiation between abortionwith its varieties, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy and othercauses of acute abdomen associated with early pregnancy ascomplicated ovarian cyst.
