The organism responds to injury by creating the appropriate inflammatory response, to restore homeostasis. Sometimes, an overwelming inflammation results, leading to abnormal inflammatory responses in the form of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), sepsis or multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Several attempts are made for understanding the role of these mediators in inflammation and creating certain investigations and therapies for these abnormal inflammatory responses.
