Abstract

This study investigated the vascular intimal medial thickness changes of CCA which considered a clue for sub clinical atherosclerosis in relation to lipid profile among newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients. Fifty patients aged 3o to 74 years (mean 47.56 + SD 8.25), 31 females and 19 males newly diagnosed diabetics, selected from out patient clinic at Diabetes Institute, fulfilling the inclusion criteria (Newly diagnosed diabetics not subjected to any risk factor for atherosclerosis apart from diabetes itself. Eighteen healthy subjects aged 32 to 50 years (Mean 42.45+ SD 4.63) as a control group were the subjects of the study. Patients and control were tested for lipid profile, Blood pressure; body mass index and CIMT assessed by ultrasonography on both sides. In the present study, IMT of the right common carotid artery was significantly greater in type 2 diabetic patients when compared to healthy controls. However there was no statistically significant difference in IMT when diabetic patients with and without dyslipidemia were compared. CIMT in diabetic patients showed a statistically significant positive correlation with age, body Mass index and systolic blood pressure. In Conclusion: From the present study we concluded that CIMT is increased in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients compared with normal non-diabetic group, which positively correlates with age, BMI and SBP.
