Aim of the work: to evaluate the Ilizarov technique (using the ring external fixation and distractional osteogenesis) in management of infected non-union, and whether it was effective in curing the infection, achieving bone union.Material and Method: 30 cases of infected non-union of fractures of the femur were treated by using the Ilizarov technique in El-Helal hospital from June 2000 to October 2002. Results: Hospitalization time averaged 20 days. The duration of application of the external fixator averaged 15 months. Duration of follow-up averaged 5 months. Excellent bone results were achieved in 53% of patients, good in 13%, fair in 3%, and poor in 30%. The functional results were excellent in 50%, good in 20%, fair in 3%, and poor in 27%.
