Classically endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity and musculature although some definitions specify that ectopic tissues must be functional. Endometriosis is a disease of the reproductive years and may be associated with pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea, dyspareunia and infertility which consists a common presenting complaint. Many studies and theories also exist about the aetio-pathogenesis and diagnosis of the disease. Laparoscopy still represents the most accurate investigative method. There is currently much debate about the advantage of treating endometriosis at its early stages. Thus many studies of the disease have been based on the possible use of new markers of recent imaging techniques in the diagnosis of endometriosis to make its diagnosis less invasive and more accessible, these markers include CA125, the more sensitive CA125 II, and other biochemical markers include CRP, SAA and anticardiolipin antibodies (ACL).
